papagomo
Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah

Kampung life by choice
Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah and wife Toh Puan Ramzah Kassim were'nt kidding when they decided to `balik kampung' in 1997, as RACHEL PHILIP discovers
NST, 25 May 2003

Few things spell status like residence and address. In the Klang Valley, Damansara Heights, Taman U-Thant and Putrajaya Precinct 10 don't just sound grand, they yell success. Properties in such locations, moreover, usually come visibly well-accessorized with three, four --- or maybe more --- well-polished, neatly displayed luxury cars on the driveways.

When it comes to readily recognizable addresses, however, what sort of image would reciting, "No.1, Batu 27 1/2, Jalan Naka-Nami", over the phone to an old classmate, who now owns real estate in Bukit Tunku, convey?

Never mind that your two-storey bungalow is located on a 700ha plot of land, and its facade partially obscured by a Mercedes, 4-wheel drive Lexus, Satria and a pair of Harley-Davidsons in the overcrowded porch.

And what about the bird cages lining both sides of said porch, or the mini aviary at the rear of the dwelling, or the 20ft by 20ft floating gazebo on the lily pond just to its left?

But where exactly is this inviting retreat?

"From Alor Star you should get onto the road which leads to Kuala Nerang and turn off at some point..." Kedahans tell you --- without much conviction.

"I have always wanted to own a ranch", says 43-year-old Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, explaining the one-way balik kampung trip he and his wife, Toh Puan Ramzah Kassim --- with two toddlers in tow --- made in 1997.

They packed up their belongings, left their house in Green Meadows, Section 13, Shah Alam, and "went home".

Although both Eskay and Ramzah hail from Kedah and spent, coincidentally, a number of years as teenagers in Sabah, their paths only crossed in Oklahoma, in the United States, as undergraduates. After graduating, the couple, who have been married for 11 years, worked in America for a while.

Eskay talks fondly of the time he and his wife drove through Amarillo, Texas, and saw the sprawling ranches there.

With his well-tanned physique, its' definitely not too difficult to imagine Eskay as a cowboy in leather boots, wide-brimmed 10-gallon hat and well-worn denims.

"In 1997, when the economy was rather volatile and people were losing money on the stock market, I decided to venture into agriculture. I wanted to go back to my kampung. I liked the way of life", Eskay explains.

Gesturing to his wife, he adds: "At first she greeted my decision with some reluctance because Naka is a rather rural area and our nearest neighbour then was a mile away".

Still, the thought of life on a farm and horse-riding, a hobby the whole family enjoys, was too sweet for Ramzah to ignore.

"Here, in Malaysia, people feel farming lacks glamour. We want to change that", Ramzah, 37, says.

The husband-and-wife team. who now rear goats and cattle commercially, are also involved in various downstream agriculture-related activities. Since 2001, they have been running the RM22 million Kedah-owned abbatoir-cold storage facility in Paya Pahlawan, Jitra.

The facility was abandoned for almost three years following its construction in 1997 because it did not have a regular supply of cattle.

The couple also opened a store selling fresh and frozen meat, called simply The Meat Shop, last November in Alor Star.

And they are setting up five other shops, all in the Klang Valley, scheduled to be opened next month.

"We want to change the way meat is sold currently, which is mostly by the roadside. It is not clean, you don't know who slaughtered it and what the animal has been feeding on", Ramzah explains.

Their goats and sheep, which are kept in 17 elevated pens just 30 metres behind the house, are looked after by a farm manager and his workers.

Surprisingly, the farm, which is home to 3,800 goats, smelt only faintly of the beasts. Ramzah says this is because their workers clean the pens daily with chemicals that disinfect the area and kill fly larvae.

"The pens in the past were not elevated, which made cleaning difficult", she says.

Now, with 50cm elevation, the goats' droppings fall to the ground through the gaps and are collected in sacks and used as fertilizer for the couple's mahogany plantation.

Ramzah adds that the odour does not reach the house, which was deliberately constructed downwind of mainstream farming activities.

The flies, she says, are a recent arrival from the plantation across the road.

Five types of goat reared on the farm --- Jamnapari, from Myanmar; Saanen, Toggenburg and Anglo-Nubian from Australia; and British Alpine from Britain --- all of which are cross-bred to make them stronger and more resistant to diseases.

"The kids are also healthier", she says, cuddling a white Saanen kid. The Saanen are specifically bred for their milk.

"Another baby to care for", Ramzah adds alluding to the family's latest addition --- a three-month-old girl, Zarafera Shazryl.

The goats are not let out to graze, instead a feedlot system is practised on the farm. The goats are given an organic feed which consists of black beans, grass and paddy straw. The cattle are fed palm kernel cake.

"The animals must be fed right; no chemicals... and halal all the way. This makes for good meat", Eskay says.

About 500 sheep are reared as "grass-cutters" while scores of geese resting under the pens keep snakes at bay.

Beyond the pens are 500,000 mahogany trees --- the couple's original business venture.

"The goat farm is actually a spin-off from the mahogany plantation project", notes Ramzah.

When 500ha had been planted with mahogany trees, the couple decided to rear 300 cows to supply dung, thinking it cheaper to generate their own supply for the trees which require one sack of manure per year.

But after almost a year they learned that cattle manure was not quite suitable for the purpose.

"A friend suggested rearing goats instead, due to the better dung quality. Moreover, goats are easier and cheaper to manage", Ramzah adds.

What was initially a "spin-off" venture is now doing so well commercially that it has overtaken the mahogany tree investment business.

"We started with 1,000 goats; now we have sold roughly 3,000 and still have 3,800. We target 10,000 goats in two years' time", Ramzah says.

But changing the way a farm is run does not mean keeping your hands out of the dirt.

Given the farm is just behind the house, Eskay inspects the goats every morning before he leaves for work.

"I vaccinate and artificially inseminate the animals myself, and if the farm workers need an extra hand I get up (in the middle of the night) and deliver the kids".

And when the goats suffer from common ailments like diarrhoea and gas problems, Ramzah plays medicine woman with several eyebrow-raising concoctions.

She recommends a shot of kopi-O kosong for diarrhoea and a dose of ginger water for "wind".

Ramzah also feeds the kids mahogany leaves if they show signs of stomach worms, and treats skin diseases by applying a mixture of turmeric powder in engine oil.

"We knew next to nothing when we started out, but now we have the biggest goat farm in Malaysia. And we have about 27 kids daily", Ramzah says proudly.

Talking about kids, where does the Datuk send his children to be educated?

"The nearby kampung school", Eskay answers simply.

In Kuala Lumpur it is an open secret that some parents "cheat" when giving their addresses to get their children into select schools with good facilities and opportunities.

Eskay believes that the kampung school is good enough.

"We were brought up in the kampung and we are decent people. We will send them abroad to further their studies, but until then, we want them to receive the proper basics".

"The people here lead simple lives. They are not materialistic. Moreover, schooling only plays a 30 per cent role in moulding children. The parents play a bigger part".

Ten-year-old Zakry was happy to play tour guide, identifying the different breeds of goats his father mentioned and fetching out the prettier kids to be photographed.

Zafrin, eight, stayed indoors, with eyes glued to the TV, his hands feverishly manipulating his Sony PlayStation console. His three-year-old sister Zazarena is still excited over her new baby sister.

Away from the city, the couple believe that they are providing a better life for their children.

"The children get a broader perspective of life. They appreciate things more and don't take life for granted. They look forward to things", says Eskay.

"My friends' children in KL have everything they want and yet are bored; they are bored in the city --- even more so when they come here".

After school the children are driven to their parents' office in Alor Star. Ramzah has incorporated a room in the top floor of their office building in which the children can nap, watch television and play.

Zakry and Zafrin have to endure English and Mathematics tuition classes three times a week like regular city children.

And certain VIPs are now familiar with No.1, Batu 27 1/2, Jalan Naka-Nami too. It is often a stopover for friends on their way to Lake Pedu, or a welcome retreat away from the hustle and bustle of city life. A sort of hideout, if you will.

In fact, a certain Datuk Seri Minister's brother would be stopping by later in the day, Ramzah says.

Besides the clean air, horse-riding in the mornings, and gorgeous sunsets viewed from the gazebo, this VIP is all for a healthy free-flow of fresh goats' milk and freckled bananas.

Ramzah says that their home is open to anyone who wants to come and see life on a farm, and hopefully entice the well-heeled to invest in agriculture and farming.

"Malaysia produces only 22 per cent of its beef needs... our import bill for the rest adds up to RM460 million annually. There is definitely room for growth in this business. So why invest in overseas markets?"

As for the couple's future plans, Ramzah says: "We plan to get Aman Agropreneurs (Eskay's company which runs the Paya Pahlawan abbatoir and The Meat Shop) listed in two years' time".

Who Is Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah ?
Datuk SEA is a renowned physiotherapist who works with not only Dallas Cowboys but he was also in the USA Olympic Team.

Datuk SEA is a "Muallaf". His father is a Punjabi and mother a Chinese. He converted to Islam. He spent most of his childhood and teenage life hanging around in Siamese Temple - Watt Siam.

He went to US to study Geology but doesnt have enough fund to finish the 1st semester. To make ends meet, he voluntered to work in the gymnasium. He was in a university in Oklahoma State . The university gymnastic team was not doing that well. So our Datuk SEA again voluntered to help. The gymnastic coaches were puzzled in the beginning. Datuk SEA gave a complete training program to the team and provide excellent physiotherapist services. In a very short period of time, the university gymnastic team made it to the top of the US National Championship. That was how Datuk Sea ends up as a physiotherapist with USA Olympic Gymnastic Team as a physiotherapist.

He was so good as a physiotherapist that he even manage to rehabilitate his wife who was injured in a bus accident whereby his wife who was driving a summer camp bus, fell into a ravine with the bus she was driving. She broke her back. His wife supposed to be an OKU for good. Datuk SEA with his special Thai Massage specialty manage to revive his wife and she is able to walk again. All this happened in the US and it occurred in a US Hospital. All this gave good publicity for Datuk SEA. The American doctor who was in the medical institutions who failed to help Datuk SEA wife was amazed with Datuk SEA capability. So he decided to quit his job and joint venture with Datuk SEA to open a physiotherapist centre. Datuk SEA made it good from then onwards.

Tan Sri Elyas Omar spotted Datuk SEA and persuaded him to be the physiotherapist for BAM. Afterwhich he was introduced to Tun Mahathir whom later allowed him to practice his special skills in a clinic in Langkawi.

When our Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim went riding in Langkawi, he fell from his horse. Datuk SEA became his physiotherapist or tukang urut. That was in 1996..Way back.

Remember Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim complained that of his back ache during his Sungai Buloh time? So he required the special services of Datuk SEA for his back problem. Datuk SEA will revive Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of any bodily ache and that is the reason why he sought the services of Datuk SEA every now and then.

Now, that make sense. They were together in a SPA. Datul Seri Anwar Ibrahim required his services again. Datuk SEA came by and book the room beside Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's room. After massage , they went back to their respective room. Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim request an extra package which consist of a China Doll...The next day both gentleman left the spa but unfortunate the client (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim), forgot his Omega Watch...

The rest is Datuk T sex video........Now it make sense , why Anwar asked Datuk SEA to get his watch for him. He was his physiotherapist or tukang urut. Not just any physiotherapist. A professional and renowned physiotherapist of an international standard repute.

Let us wait for the Royal Commision.
